Tuning and caring for a MoYu speed cube
A speed cube is adjustable equipment, not a finished object, and the single biggest improvement available to most cubers costs nothing: setting the cube up properly. Factory tension is a compromise aimed at nobody in particular. Ten minutes with the supplied tool will do more for your times than the next fifty dollars of hardware.
Diagnose before you adjust
Two symptoms, two directions. If the cube catches and stops mid-turn, especially when you turn fast, it is too tight — the layers are not able to cut a corner and the mechanism is binding. If pieces twist out of true, if a corner lifts, or if anything pops, it is too loose. Make one change at a time and solve for a few minutes between changes, because the difference between good and slightly wrong is small and your hands adapt faster than you notice. Write down where you started so you can get back there.
Tension on a dual-adjustment cube
The newer WeiLong and RS3M cubes have external adjustment, which means a small tool, a series of detents, and no disassembly. Tension and magnet strength are usually separate: tension changes how far the layers sit apart and therefore how far they will cut, and magnet strength changes how hard the layer snaps home. Adjust tension first until the cube stops locking, then adjust magnets to taste. Keep all faces at the same setting unless you have a specific reason not to — an unevenly tensioned cube turns differently depending on which hand is working, which is worse than being slightly too tight everywhere.
Tension on a MagLev cube
MagLev cubes have no springs to compress, so the adjustment works on the gap between the repelling magnets instead. The practical procedure is the same, with one difference worth knowing: because magnetic repulsion rises steeply as the gap closes, the last click on a MagLev cube changes more than the last click on a sprung cube. Go slowly at the tight end. The payoff is that once it is right, it stays right — there is no spring to settle, so a MagLev cube you tuned last year is still tuned.
Lubricant, honestly
A new MoYu cube does not need lubricant. After a few thousand solves it will start to feel dry or scratchy, and at that point a thin silicone lube on the core and a lighter one on the pieces restores it. Thicker weights slow the cube and make it feel more controlled; thinner weights make it faster and noisier. Use very little — far less than feels right — because excess lube collects dust and turns into grey paste. One drop per face, reassemble, solve for five minutes to distribute, reassess.
The things that actually kill cubes
Grit is the main one. A cube that has been on the floor, in a bag with sand, or handled after crisps will grind, and no amount of lubricant fixes an abrasive inside the mechanism — it needs taking apart and washing in warm water, then drying completely before lube. Heat is the second: a stickerless cube left on a car dashboard warps and never comes back. The third is over-tightening, which strains the core threads on a sprung cube and can crack a centre. Avoid those three and a MoYu cube will outlast your interest in that particular puzzle.
What MoYu speed cubes are, in one paragraph
MoYu Culture — also known simply as MoYu — is a Chinese factory in Guangzhou that has been making speed cubes since 2008 and is famous among speedcubers for a tremendous release pace few rivals maintain. Cubing Classroom, generally sold as the MeiLong line, is its budget sub-brand; GuoGuan, SenHuan, MoJue and Cong sit alongside it inside the same group.
The flagship WeiLong is the single most notable example: it is the cube cubers reach for in competition, the one most often on the mat when a world record is set, and every upgrade carries real technology — a magnet count you can read off the box, MagLev tension, a ball core, a smoother and faster feel — rather than new artwork. A collection that began with one 3×3 — the puzzle most people still call a Rubik’s cube — now runs from 2×2 to 15×15, through shape puzzles like the Skewb and the Pyraminx, and into gift sets for beginners.
That is why MoYu stays popular with people who solve fast: big cube or small, the innovation sits in the layers where a solver can feel it, the turn stays stable, and the plastic keeps its look.
